It'll be packed: The FIRST organization expects 40, attendees —- students, friends, parents, mentors, coaches, volunteers and sponsors. There will be multiple competitions taking place on multiple levels of Cobo Hall — giving spectators lots to see and do over the course of the championships, which begin Wednesday.
The three upper divisions all compete with robots, while the youngest students build and program a model that moves using LEGO parts. It was founded by Dean Kamen, who invented the Segway scooter, the insulin pump and portable dialysis machines.
Good news: It's free to attend the championships. And, you'll get access to the pits — the area where teams furiously work on their robots between matches. But you will have to register.
You can do that in advance online at www. You can also register on-site. And if you want an in-depth tour of the championship, you can sign up for one given by one of the hundreds of "student ambassadors" who represent teams across the world, including more than from Michigan.
The tours are available Wednesday through Friday. You can sign up for one at the student ambassadors desk located near the registration area. The robots will be in action beginning Wednesday and they'll keep battling through Saturday.

Parks in downtown Detroit on Friday kicked off a STEM smorgasbord of free activities to go along with the competition. If you go to Beacon Park, you'll find a pop-up arcade featuring 20 classic video games that have been reinvented using technology, as well as the world's largest game of Pac-Man.
Also featured: ultimate frisbee, putt-putt golf, bumper bubble ball soccer and trivia activities. Elsewhere in downtown parks: Capitol Park will feature augmented reality demonstrations and live performances from Detroit music students and artists; Grand Circus Park will feature life-size foosball and bowling, bumper bubble ball soccer and DJ dance parties.
Meanwhile, Campus Martius and Cadillac Square will feature science shows, robot-assisted games and more traditional games such as ping pong. The Spirit of Detroit Plaza will feature a DJ, a lucky penny contest, a dancing robot called D-Tron, lawn games and street performances.
