Rush hour in Austin starts at 6am until about 9am. Then from 4pm to 7pm it gets busy on weekdays — especially when heading north of the city center — with most traffic clearing by pm. Interstate 35 I runs from north to south through Austin, crossing the Colorado River near Downtown and connecting it to San Antonio in the south and in the north. Highway US is a mile road that passes the west side of Austin Airport and goes through East Austin before heading north-west across the state.

Highway US heads through central Austin after joining from the west, then goes east all the way to Houston. The mile drive from Austin to San Antonio takes around an hour and a half.

Take the I south until you reach the city, merging with the I before heading Downtown. Wander around the expansive grounds filled with monuments and statues remembering the Vietnam War, a Texas Ranger and even a miniature Statue of Liberty. Miles of walking and cycling trails run along the shoreline, connecting city parks and riverside attractions including the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue and the Long Center of Performing Arts. In Zilker Park on the south shore, the Rowing Dock offers kayak, paddle boards and boat rentals.

On-street parking is available along S. Lakeshore Boulevard. Across three floors of interactive exhibits you can learn about the story of Texas. Admire Austin from above at the top of Mount Bonnell within Covert Park, just a minute drive northwest of Downtown.
